How to install a Skill in Claude Code, Codex and Cursor

A Skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that tells your AI how to do one job. You do not need to know where it goes: hand the file to your AI and it installs it.

The easy way (all tools)

  1. 1. Download the Skill zip.
  2. 2. Open your project in the AI tool and drag the zip into the chat.
  3. 3. Send the sentence below. The AI reads the Skill and asks before saving.

Install the Skill in this zip file into this project's Skill folder (Claude Code uses .claude/skills/, Codex uses .agents/skills/, Cursor uses .cursor/skills/). Read it first, then tell me when it is ready.

AI tools ask before writing into their Skill folder, and some block downloads from the internet by default. That is why you download the file yourself and hand it over.

Where each tool keeps Skills

Only needed if you want to check the AI put it in the right place.

Claude Code

This project: .claude/skills/ · All projects: ~/.claude/skills/

Starts the Skill on its own when your request matches. You can also type /launch-check.

Codex

This project: .agents/skills/ · All projects: ~/.agents/skills/

Asks permission before writing to the Skill folder. Approve it once.

Cursor

This project: .cursor/skills/ · All projects: ~/.cursor/skills/

Free plans only allow the Auto model. If you see “Named models unavailable”, switch the model back to Auto.

Lovable, Bolt, v0 and other online builders

These builders have no Skill folder. Every zip includes prompt-version.md: open it, copy everything, and paste it into the builder's chat.
